Bondi Beach and Watsons Bay

Mikala, accompanied by her mother-in-law Jenny, picked us up at our hotel on our first morning in Sydney. Her plan was to "wizz" us around the city which she obviously loves. She was anxious that we should love it too, and her enthusiasm was infectious. We cruised through downtown while she and Jenny pointed out the sights and described the lifestyle enjoyed by Sydneysiders.

After a spin through downtown, we stopped at the iconic Bondi Beach.

Bondi is, of course, famous for its surfing.

The beach is about 1/2 mile long. This is the view from the the northern end looking south.

We had planned to eat at Icebergs Restaurant which sits along the cliff in the picture below and overlooks the beach, but the pounding beat of loud music from a special fashion event was emanating from inside so we decided to dine at Watson's Bay instead.

We stopped enroute to enjoy a view of the harbor from a park on a hillside. Mikala pointed out that many people can enjoy a view of the bay from their homes because the terrain is hilly and the coastline has numerous inlets.

Watsons Bay was a lovely place for lunch. It seems like most Australian restaurants and bars have outdoor seating areas, and the outside tables usually fill up before the inside ones.

On the way back to Sydney we made a quick stop near MacQuarie Lighthouse.

Our final stop of the day was the Sydney Fish Market where we enjoyed eating fresh prawns and tossing the heads to a mildly-interested pelican and several over-excited seagulls. The peel and eat prawns were the best I've ever had.

It had been a perfect day in a delightful city.
